ABOUT ONLINE VOICE LESSONS WITH ALEX TAYLOR

For singers ready to stop fighting their voice and start trusting it.

The man on the left is wearing glasses and a black shirt, laughing with an open mouth, sitting in a room with warm lighting, a poster, a guitar, and a hanging light bulb. The man on the right has light brown hair, is wearing large headphones, and has a smile, with a bright background.

Does any of this sound familiar?

You sing along with your favorite artist and a small voice tells you you'll never sound like that

Your voice feels unfamiliar and the harder you try to control it, the worse it seems to sound

Before long these thoughts start before you even open your mouth.

And the tension starts before you make a sound.

All of this kills your confidence.

You wish singing could feel easy, free, and that you could find your own voice.

“Alex helped me move from overthinking to feeling. I’ve gone from anxious to confident, and it shows every time I sing.”

-Adam Howarth

Welcome to Forward Voice Studio, where we create the environment teens and adults need to turn their passion into confident performances.

The Studio is built on one conviction, learned from years of teaching singers and from hard personal experience: judgment kills confidence, and curiosity grows it.

  • Maybe you're a high school theatre kid preparing for an audition. You’ve done a few shows and can’t wait for the next one. You’re thinking about majoring in music or theatre and want to start taking your craft seriously to gain an edge.

  • Maybe you're an adult who used to sing in choir or did musicals in high school and wants to find that spark again. You’re ready to audition for a choir or community theatre show but you want to knock some of the rust off your voice before you do.

  • Or maybe you're a complete beginner who's never had a lesson in your life. You love singing, are in awe of your favorite singers, and are ready for the challenge of finding your own voice.

No matter who you are or what your experience is, we work with self-described perfectionists to train their physical AND mental skills. Rather than self-criticizing with thoughts like  “that was terrible”, we shift the question to investigation “huh, what just happened there?”. Then we go find out. And along the way not only do we build you skills but we discover your unique artistic identity and voice, the superpower of any singer.

Lessons take place online over Zoom, whether you're across town here in Madison, WI, or around the world.

“Working with Alex completely changed how I use my voice. Singing is finally something I can enjoy instead of pushing through. If you’re thinking about it—sign up as soon as you can.

Forward Voice Studio’s approach is built on one guiding principle: Good singing is simultaneously a physical and emotional skill, and working on one without the other only gets you so far.

On the physical side, the Studio uses the principles of Somatic Voicework™, developed by Jeanie LoVetri. Alex trained in the method directly with LoVetri and through further private study with Doug Peck, whose recent clients include Billie Eilish and Hayley Williams. Grammy winners and Broadway performers seek out this method because not only does it train towards measurable, concrete goals (a usable range of at least two octaves, the ability to sing any note in that range at any volume, on any vowel), but also because it takes into account what makes your singing unique in the first place.

But physical training is only the first step.

Many singers obsess over technique, but it can become a convenient place to hide from the vulnerability that’s even more important. At Forward Voice Studio, the technical and the expressive are both taken seriously. After all, the extent to which you can use your physical tools is the extent to which you can express yourself. But technique alone will not make you a compelling singer

Think about it: why are you drawn to the singers you love? Maybe they have extraordinary voices, or do things technically that blow your mind. But plenty of singers can do impressive things, yet they don’t all draw you in. Why those specific people? It’s almost always something about the way they express themselves, the story underneath the sound, that keeps you coming back. That is the thing most voice lessons never touch, and it is exactly what Forward Voice Studio trains toward.

Understanding your story, your influences, your style, and how all of that lives in your voice matters just as much as knowing what your tongue is doing on a high note. We’ll investigate both with equal weight, and from the very first lesson. Because there are songs you can sing on day one, and you deserve to sing them!

If this sounds like a lot to manage at once, it is! That is why you’ll be carefully and expertly guided through each lesson so that you cover all of these dimensions in a way that’s manageable. You’ll also be guided through a goal-setting framework so you leave each session with a clear picture of what to work on and the accountability to get it done.

Learning to sing is a steady process that evolves over time, and, by taking little steps Forward each day, you’ll achieve your goals before you know it!

“I was ready to quit singing after losing my confidence and even having my voice shut down. Seven months later, thanks to Alex’s patience and techniques, I’m tackling high notes I thought were monsters—and singing songs I thought I’d never touch again.”

Take the first step Forward

Our singers aren’t looking for quick fixes or shortcuts.

They have a deep curiosity, about themselves, the world, and their voice, and how it all fits together.

If that sounds like you, then Forward Voice Studio will help you figure out not only how to make the sounds you want to make but to also understand why you want to make them. That’s the ingredient it takes to go from casual singer to creative artist, and it’s something that a lot of voice lessons fail to prioritize.

Our goal isn’t just to “sing better.” Our goal is to give you the physical, mental, and emotional freedom to express yourself and bravely share your story with whatever audience you encounter, for the rest of your life. That’s the superpower of the singers we admire - and it can be yours too

If you’re finally ready to get serious about understanding the superpowers of your voice, you have what it takes to start.

All it takes is one step Forward.

“[Alex] doesn’t just teach you how to use your voice - he helps you discover the voice you didn’t know you had.
